Mangrove goons threaten greens in front of cops

Mumbai: A team of senior forest officials and environmentalists were heckled, abused and threatened on Tuesday in the presence of police personnel when they went for an inspection of the Dahisar site where mangroves were being systematically destroyed over the past few weeks.
Thane assistant conservator of forests and the Thane district forest officer were part of the team that included noted environmentalist Debi Goenka. The group of people tried to stop them when they were inspecting the Dahisar mangrove belt on Tuesday afternoon to take an audit of massive destruction of mangroves.
State conservator of forests Sribhagvan had appointed a committee comprising three forest officers and an environmental activist to conduct an inspection report after the department recieved several complaints of destruction of mangroves at plot number 344 in Dahisar near Link Road.
“Although we managed to conduct the inspection, when we were returning, a group of 40-50 people surrounded our vehicle and protested that I should not be allowed to enter the premises,” Goenka said.
It was only after senior police officials who were accompanying the team interfered that things were sorted out.
“Our inspection revealed a massive destruction of mangroves here. The encroachers have constructed a 30- to 40-foot-wide road over the mangroves destroying hectares,” a forest offical said.
Goenka and I C Colony residents — who had been campigaining to save mangroves in the Kandarpada-Dahisar stretch — faced the wrath of hoodlums a week earlier. “These attacks by goons clearly show that local mafia groups are hand-in-glove with the goons so that the mangrove forest can reclaimed,” said Goenka.

Debi Goenka, forest officials claim harassment by Dahisar developer
MUMBAI MIRROR BUREAU
Adeveloper allegedly tried to obstruct forest department officials inspecting a mangrove patch off New Link Road at Dahisar on Tuesday afternoon. Following complaints from locals and activists about mangroves being hacked under guise of repairing a bund, the state appointed a four-member committee comprising forest officials and activist Debi Goenka to assess the damage. ACP T R Chavan and a posse of policemen accompanied them to ensure there was no disturbance.
“Developer Jayesh Shah stopped the police vehicle on its way back, and got into a heated argument,” alleged Goenka.
He said, Shah has secured development rights for the patch which has been declared as forest land, for his salt making business. Goenka claimed the Salt Commissionerate has deemed this land unfit for salt business in January, a claim denied by Shah.”The bund was in existence and Shah secured permission from the collector to repair it. However, a road was being constructed and mangroves hacked. We have done a panchnama and gathered evidence. A report will be submitted on Wednesday,” said divisional forest officer Satyajit Gujjar.
Shah said, “Not a single mangrove has been hacked. We have filed a petition in Supreme Court against the government declaring this as forest and also secured court permission to repair the bund. We have lodged a complaint against Goenka for trespassing.”
