Ground level Air Pollution tackling

Air pollution is increasing these days due to burning of various substances, including wood, leaves, and even toxic substances like used rubber tyres and plastic.

This picture shows a series of events that took place today morning at Ganpat Patil Nagar.

New Link Road Forum member Dr. Mathew saw thick black smoke coming out of the slum at 730 AM. He went to investigate and this is what he saw.

Dr. Mathew went closer and asked the people what they were burning. They said it is wood. When he saw the black stuff inside, he asked them again and they admitted that this was vehicle spare parts and discarded waste.

He told the people assembled the dangers of burning these things, including the risk of cancer to themselves, their children and the citizens of IC Colony and Dahisar. The lady standing by the fire had a child with her and she also agreed that burning such things is dangerous.

The people immediately brought water and doused the fire.

Dr. Mathew requested them to dispose off such waste in future by other means such as burying in the ground.

This was a small step to curb air pollution, which can be taken by any concerned citizen. If you notice people burning anything emanating black smoke, beware, it can be carcinogenic. Ask them to stop immediately.

Let us do our bit to make life healthier for all.

[…] Dr. Mathew and other New Link Road Residents Forum members have been stopping people burning rubber in various places and are now glad that this carcinogenic practice will be stopped and heavily fined. https://newlinkroad.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/ground-level-air-pollution-tackling/ […]
