Mumbai: The BMC collected Rs 3.62 crore by fining 2.1 lakh unauthorized hawkers across the city’s 24 wards in the 2013 calendar year, shows an RTI reply.
An analysis of the data shows that the maximum collection of Rs 36.6 lakh was made in A ward (Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Nariman Point, Churchgate, Fort) from 22,156 hawkers, the highest among all wards.
Surprisingly, H (west) that encompasses some of the main areas that spring to mind at the mention of hawkers — Linking Road, Hill Road, Kharie village in old Khar and Station road at Santa Cruz — comes at fourth place on collections (Rs 19.9 lakh) and 23rd on hawkers fined (4,404). Even combined with H (east) ward, it cannot top Ward A’s numbers.
Doing better in collections are Kandivli, Charkop and Poisar with revenue of Rs 23 lakh from 6,795 hawkers and Parel, Sewri, Naigaum with Rs 21 lakh from 4,349 hawkers.
Besides A ward, other areas where the most hawkers were fined were not necessarily those with the highest revenue. For instance, Borivli, Gorai and Magathane cracked down on 17,600 hawkers (the most after A), but collected Rs 18.5 lakh.
