He noticed dumping of debris on mangrove swamps behind the crematorium at Dahisar (West) last week and informed the Police and other officials immediately, after seeing the documents given by the people doing dumping which only showed permission to excavate Murrum or earth.

MUMBAI: In another case of mangroves being destroyed, a builder has been dumping excavated earth on mangrove swamps behind the crematorium in Dahisar (West).
Activist Harish Pandey of New Link Road Residents Forum and local Corporator Sheetal Mhatre of the Shiv Sena approached the MHB Colony police. Two first information reports were filed.
The police have also seized two dumpers on Saturday.
According to a Bombay high court (HC) October 2005 order, development or dumping within 50 metres of mangroves is banned, and dumping on mangroves is a violation under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.
Pandey said the dumping has affected approximately two acres of mangrove land.
“The builder has permission to excavate murum from a site located barely 200 meters from the mangroves, Pandey said, adding, “With impunity, they are dumping on mangroves, despite the collector’s excavation permission, which states that excavated earth should be dumped appropriately!”
A compound wall was being constructed that could potentially block the ingress of seawater into mangroves and choke them, Pandey added.
The Tehsildar and the civic body were informed on Friday, but the dumping continued on Saturday 24th May 2014.
However, during the day, civic officials and M H B Colony police stopped work at the site and also seizing two dumpers.
“We are investigating into the matter against the builder,” said an official from MHB Colony police station.
