Women do mangrove cleanup drive

Guardians of the Shore: Celebrating Our Women Mangrove Soldiers

While the world celebrated International Women’s Day with speeches and bouquets, a dedicated group of women in Navi Mumbai celebrated with gloves, gumboots, and grit. At the Sarsole jetty, the Environment Life Foundation marked its 290th consecutive week of mangrove cleanups by honoring the “Women Mangrove Soldiers” who serve as the backbone of our coastal defense.

A Legacy of Consistency

Consistency is the truest form of activism. For over five years—without a single break—this community-led initiative has mobilized 1.3 lakh volunteers. This past weekend, more than 100 citizens gathered to remove over 600kg of waste from the fragile mangrove roots.

The haul was a sobering reflection of urban consumption. Volunteers waded through:

  • Plastic & Thermocol: Single-use cutlery and grocery packaging.
  • Daily Essentials: Pens, toys, footwear, and even school bags.
  • Hazardous Waste: Medical containers and cosmetic packaging.

From Despair to Determination

It is easy to look at a shoreline choked with plastic and feel defeated. However, the atmosphere at Sarsole was anything but grim. Led by women who view environmental stewardship as a “way of living” rather than a one-off event, the drive was fueled by a practical, hopeful determination.

These mangroves are more than just trees; they are Navi Mumbai’s natural flood barriers and carbon sinks. By dedicating this milestone to women, the movement highlighted a vital truth: environmental action is strongest when rooted in the community.

The New Link Road Perspective At New Link Road, we believe that urban progress and ecological preservation must walk hand-in-hand. The “Women Mangrove Soldiers” are living proof that local heroes are the most effective shield against climate change.

Let’s not just celebrate these women one day a year—let’s join them in the mud.
