Corporator to demand dry waste sorting centre for each city ward

MUMBAI: Even as the civic body’s policy making it mandatory to segregate waste at source has received poor response, a resolution for creation of dry waste sorting centre in each ward is likely to be placed in the general body meeting on Thursday.

Anant Nar, Shiv Sena corporator from Jogeshwari who plans to table the resolution, said, “Generally, ragpickers sort the garbage along the roads. The civic body should designate spaces for organised dry waste sorting centres for each ward.”

He said that earmarking these spaces in the city’s development plan for 2014-34 is a must for successful implementation of the idea. “We often talk about a cleaner and greener city. But, we also need to take concrete steps to achieve the dream.”

The move, if implemented even partially, could go a long way in streamlining waste segregation, claim activists. “People often complain that ragpickers occupy public places to sort dry waste. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporate needs to accommodate them to systematise the waste segregation process,” said Jyoti Mhapsekar of Stree Mukti Sanghatana, an NGO.

Mhapsekar, whose organisation runs five dry waste centres, said that there is a need to decentralise the dry waste sorting mechanism. “It is the only logical way to control the huge amount of waste generated in the city daily.”

There are 12 dry waste sorting centres across the city, which are run by five NGOs on the land allotted to them by the civic body.
